Today on Meet the Author, please join me for an interview with Fantasy Science Fiction Network (FSFN) member, Emma Lynn. Emma has stopped by to talk about writing her fantasy novel, The Dark Ones.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a 17-year-old homeschooler who likes to read. Writing later became a passion of mine when I wrote a short story for a contest. I love taking pictures and it’s always been a dream of mine to travel the world with my Cannon camera in hand.
What inspired you to write The Dark Ones?
I had a dream one night—it was a vague one—about these dark creatures that came down from the sky. I didn’t really understand what was happening in the dream but when I woke up, the idea was stuck and I decided to write it down. I didn’t have a clue about where it would go but I sat down for hours planning it all out.
What does your heroine, Isla, yearn for?
Isla was a hard character to describe, personality wise. She was strong and determined, yet innocent and naïve. What she really wanted out of her life was for her loved ones to be safe and like everybody, she wanted to be loved.
What’s the novel about and who would enjoy it?
The Dark Ones is set in the future, after the world had been poisoned by the dark figures that took over the government. Isla and many others live in a cave that’s underground, trying to stay safe from the Dark Ones that are outside the cave. This story is geared more toward Young Adult.
What do you think makes for great fantasy fiction?
A great idea. Fantasy has the core characteristics being angels, demons, witches, maybe mermaids. With those, you have to have an amazing idea to keep the story afloat.
Who are some of your biggest influences as a writer?
My sister. She’s the one who told me to keep writing, especially on those days when I just wanted to give up writing. We always encourage each other to keep writing and help each other out with plots.
How do you approach crafting a novel?
I first write out what’s happening in the story. I write the plot line and the most important things that will happen in the story. I then grab a notebook and write out a general take on what will happen in each chapter. From there, I write!
What’s ahead for you?!
I’m currently working on two series! One will focus on a different person each story, each being part of the same band. So the characters are linked together. The second series I’ve started is set after World War III.
Please return the questions with the following all in one Word doc, except the cover, of course, will be separate!
Synopsis of The Dark Ones:
The ones that destroyed our world.
The year is 2321 and the world is not how they thought it would be. There is no flying cars, any robot butlers, or hover skateboards. What there is though . . . is black.
The world was attacked over a hundred years ago by what they call the Dark Ones. Human bodies with coal-black sharp wings. They destroyed the world.
Isla lives underground with other people like her. They have lived with their own laws for many years but as trouble happens inside their home, the outside isn’t all of their worries. Follow Isla’s story of horror, truths and romance in The Dark Ones.
